The eco-cleaning cabinet

Nowadays, there is a wide range of different cleaning products available in stores. However, many of the cleaning detergents offered are harmful to the environment, expensive and often unnecessary.

Nowadays, there is a wide range of different cleaning products available in stores. However, many of the cleaning detergents offered are harmful to the environment, expensive and often unnecessary.

For sustainable household cleaning, the following well-degradable products belong in the eco-cleaning cupboard:

  • Hand dishwashing detergent
  • Neutral or all-purpose cleaner
  • Vinegar or vinegar cleaner or citric acid (depending on the material)
  • Spirit
  • Scouring milk
  • Viennese lime (alternatively cleaning stone, instead of scouring agent), sodium bicarbonate and soda ash

In addition - depending on requirements - a few special cleaning detergents for:

  • Carpet cleaning
  • Furniture care
  • Leather care
  • if necessary, stain removal

Do not use aggressive special products such as drain cleaners, disinfectants, sanitary and toilet cleaners, fragrance cubes for toilets, oven cleaners and basic cleaners. There are equivalent, more environmentally friendly substitutes for most of these products.

Always make sure you use the correct dosage of your cleaning products. This way you do not only protect the environment, but also your wallet!

Tip:

A hand dishwashing detergent solution becomes a glass cleaner when mixed with spirit, and neutral detergent solution with a splash of vinegar essence replaces expensive bathroom cleaners. Bottled in a handy spray bottle, it can also be stored for in-between use.

Households with small children should use cheap household vinegar instead of corrosive vinegar essence.

Cleaning detergents should always be left to soak in for some time. This makes mechanical work easier. Stubborn dirt is best soaked in water beforehand so that it is easier to remove.

Mechanical aids such as:

  • Brushes
  • Microfibre cloths (fine or coarse, depending on the purpose)
  • Sponges (use the fine, light scouring side or the coarse, dark scouring side, depending on the purpose)
  • Stainless steel spiral
  • Rubber lip
  • Suction cup
  • etc.

support environmentally friendly cleaning in the household. To avoid unnecessary waste, reusable cleaning cloths should preferably be used. Old (dish) towels and linen cloths are also good for cleaning.

Be sure to clean plastic dishwashing brushes, rags and sponges at regular intervals at a hot temperature (>60°C) (e.g. in the dishwasher), otherwise bacteria can multiply there.

Caution: Always keep cleaning detergents out of reach of children and have the telephone number of the poison control centre to hand. For your own safety, never mix different cleaning products and follow product instructions, safety symbols and dosage instructions. Always keep cleaning detergents in their original packaging to avoid confusion.
